Cambridge United are pleased to announce that Liam Bennett has signed a new two-year deal with the Club…

The 23-year-old defender – who won the Club’s Player of the Year award in 2023/24 – extends his stay into a fifth season, having joined as an 18-year-old from AFC Sudbury.

It didn’t take long for Bennett to make an impression on the First Team. By his third season he became a regular fixture in the side and has made 133 appearances for the Club to date.

He is the Club’s longest-serving player and has now committed to remaining with the U’s until 2027.

Liam Bennett said, “I am delighted to be staying with the Club. Last year was frustrating for everyone, but it’s time to look forward now.

“I have been here long enough to know what Cambridge United is all about and it’s important that we get back to winning games of football.

“The Club means a lot to me and I want to be part of its next successful chapter. Under the leadership of Neil and Bonz, I believe that this season can be an exciting one and a positive step towards getting this Club back to where it belongs.”

Head Coach Neil Harris added, “I am delighted that Liam has decided to stay at the Football Club. He certainly wasn’t short of options and he is a very talented full back at the level.

“He has been a consistent performer for the Football Club for a period of time now and offers us variety with his ability to play as both a full-back and wing-back.

"We look forward to continue working on his development and I think Liam will certainly thrive working with Adam, who will implement a strong defensive structure and culture.”
